Today's article at LiveScience.com says that less than ½ of Americans are satisfied with their jobs. I fall into a double whammy situation as workers 45 to 54 have the second lowest level of satisfaction at less than 45% and I live in the New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania region where nobody seems happy. Less than 41% at least. What bothers workers most? Bonus plans and promotion policies.
Have you ever noticed that no one ever expects Todd's promotion and that even the people that hand out your bonus check can't tell you how it was calculated.
I'm sure bad bosses fall into the top few reasons that people aren't happy either. I'm reading a great book with a mildly controversial title, "The No Asshole Rule" by Robert I. Sutton, PhD. Kent Blumberg wrote a review on his blog that I recommend you read. But don't just read the review, follow Kent's advice and read the book. I recommend you go straight to page 9 and look at Test One and Test Two for spotting that A-Hole or confirming that they are one.
So here are the questions. What is so dysfunctional in the American workplace that bonus plans and promotion policies create such worker discontent? And why do we allow so many disruptive individuals to exist in our workplace that a PhD can write a book about them?
Sure makes you wonder…..
